Job Requirements and Duties
Microsoft/Cisco/HP/Citrix (ie: Ninja):
Minimum Technical Requirements
Applicants for this position must have these skills at a minimum:
•      Ability to manage Microsoft DNS, Active Directory, group policies
•      Understand and know how to implement OSI model, RAID levels, SNMP
•      Be experienced with commercial backup and anti-virus software
•      Understanding and ability to implement basic RIP routing and switching VLANs
•      Ability to design, deploy and support Microsoft Exchange Server, Windows and Active Directory based networks
 General Prerequisites:
•      Obviously a solid foundation in Microsoft systems technologies is a requirement in an industry where Microsoft products are ubiquitous.
•      Systems knowledge of Cisco, and HP and/or Dell technologies is also preferred.
•      A valid California driver’s license and clean driving record are required.
•      Ability to lift and move up to 50 lbs. is also required.
 Responsibilities:
1.    The primary responsibility of this position is to provide proactive technical support and design services to our customers, on a billable basis, maintaining a minimum daily utilization of 60% overall.
2.    SE will be expected to document their work daily.
3.    SE will be expected to maintain and continually develop a higher than average level of IT knowledge.
4.    SE may occasionally be asked to assist VNS sales account executives in customer meetings, and to develop scopes of work, and bills of materials for projects.
Behavioral Characteristics, Attitudes and Skills Required:
Critical independent thinking, to solve problems with new technologies is a constant in our business.  Candidate must operate with a high degree of maturity, resilience, and tenacity.  First impression and strong communication skills are vital. Candidate must be an excellent listener, who can then clearly articulate to customers how a solution will help them, and why, when they need to spend money, they should.  This obviously requires a strong knowledge of said technologies, which means that candidate must be self-motivated to continually learn new technologies.  The ability to deal with different personalities, and remain calm and in control in stressful situations is critical. Most importantly, candidate must be absolutely trustworthy and entirely committed to follow-through, and will be expected to take complete ownership of customer problems.
Travel:
Our focus is regional (see www.vns.net/geo for an overview of our service geo) and we rarely have a need for travel, so you will be home each night.
Work Hours:
We work standard business hours, M-F, 8-5.  We will occasionally work an after-hours or weekend project (and provide O/T or comp time to offset that), but that is the exception, not the rule.  The majority of time, we work standard hours. Because we use a proactive approach to everything we do, this is unlike the typical IT admin’s existence, where they are perpetually on call, working odd hours.
Educational and Certification Requirements
Education:
A high school diploma is required; a Bachelor’s degree in Information System is preferred.  A minimum of 3-5 years of applied hands-on experience is required.   We have met and worked with incredibly talented people who’ve had no formal education (and we have met people with extensive schooling that have difficulty with applied technology).  However, we believe that a formal education is a good indicator of one’s level of commitment – but it is certainly not a requirement to be a successful network engineer.  ‘Book smart’ only doesn’t work here…but it helps.
Certified candidates are preferred (ie: MCITP, MCSE, CCNP, CCNA, VCP, ASE, etc.), but if you have at least 3-5 years’ applied experience, a passion to learn, and you are willing to attain your certifications, we'll work with the right person to help get you there.
Our top priority is finding someone who's a good team fit, with the knowledge, experience and passion to keep learning. Our manufacturer partners mandate that we employ certified engineers, so acquiring certifications, if hired, is non-negotiable.
If you are interested, please reply with an updated copy of your resume in .doc format along with a good time to call you back. If you are unavailable for work, then feel free to share my contact information with any of your friends/colleagues who might be interested. If you do not wish to be contacted for future jobs, please let me know and I will promptly modify our database accordingly.

Sincerely,
